Smart TV won’t connect to WiFi? We fix it — but try these first.

Most “won’t connect to WiFi” calls turn out to be the router, the network password, or the 2.4GHz/5GHz band — not the TV. We’ll walk through the quick fixes on the phone and save you a service call. If it really is a TV-side WiFi chip failure, we can diagnose and repair it in-home.

What “won’t connect” usually means

WiFi symptoms vary widely. The specific one tells us where to look.

  • TV doesn’t see your WiFi network at all. Usually a 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz issue. Many older smart TVs only support 2.4GHz; if your router only broadcasts a 5GHz network or uses one combined SSID, the TV might not see it.
  • TV sees the network but rejects the password. The password is right (you can connect other devices). Usually a network-name with special characters or a WPA3-only router that the TV can’t negotiate with.
  • Connects but immediately disconnects. Signal-strength issue, IP-conflict, or a smart-TV firmware bug. Sometimes a router reboot fixes it permanently.
  • Streaming apps say “no internet” but the network shows connected. The TV thinks it’s online but DNS / DHCP isn’t resolving. Router reset usually fixes this.
  • Was working, suddenly stopped. Either a router firmware update changed something, or the smart TV got a firmware update that broke compatibility. Both are common.
  • Worked once, never since — brand new TV. Sometimes a manufacturing defect on the WiFi chip. Warranty claim first; if past warranty, we can replace the WiFi module.

Try these before you call

Try these in order. Most WiFi calls resolve at home.

  1. Reboot the router. Unplug the router (and modem if separate) for 60 seconds. Plug back in. Wait two minutes for it to fully boot. Try connecting the TV again. This fixes ~40% of WiFi issues.
  2. Forget the network and re-add it. In the TV’s WiFi settings, find your network, choose “forget” or “remove,” then add it again and re-enter the password.
  3. Check if your router has a 2.4GHz-only band. If you’ve been using a 5GHz-only network and the TV is older, you may need to split your router’s 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands into separate SSIDs (your router admin page has this setting). Older smart TVs often need the 2.4GHz band.
  4. Try a wired Ethernet connection. If your TV has an Ethernet port and your router is close enough, a wired connection bypasses the WiFi chip entirely — and if it works, that confirms the issue is WiFi-side, not internet-side.
  5. Factory reset the smart TV platform. Settings → System → Reset. Last resort but often works for “was working, suddenly stopped” cases.

What we do on the in-home visit

If you’ve done the above and it’s still not connecting, the issue is usually one of two things: a failing WiFi module on the TV (rare but happens), or a router-side issue that needs deeper diagnosis. Our tech will check both in-home, replace the WiFi module if it’s the TV, or recommend a router upgrade if it’s the network. Either way, we’ll diagnose before any work.

Typical cost ranges

Phone-walkthrough troubleshootingFree
WiFi module replacement$160 – $220
Main board with integrated WiFi replacement$200 – $260

Prices include parts and labor. Final number depends on brand, size, and exact failure. We quote in writing before starting.

When repair doesn’t make sense

If your home router is more than five years old and you’ve been fighting WiFi issues across multiple devices (not just the TV), the right answer is a new router — not a TV repair. We’ll tell you that on the phone if it’s clearly a router-side issue.
